When I was young my family lived with my great-grandmother for awhile and I remember watching tv shows with my mom in the afternoon before my younger sister and I took to the backyard.

Growing up my mom was a HUUUUUUUGE fan of The Monkees. She was president of their local fan club and everything. So when their show was on tv when I was a kid we'd watch it with her. I was obsessed with the show.  And even from the very beginning my favorite was Mike Nesmith. xD

The Beatles cartoon always came on after the Monkees and at the time I thought the Beatles were trying to be like the Monkees so I didn't like them AT ALL. My mom never corrected it.  It wasn't until I got older that I realized how WRONG that was. How embarrassing.
Though my feelings towards the Beatles changed down the line for sure, I never lost my love for the Monkees. They'll most def be showing up in other memories.

"They got The Monkees on here. You know they were a huge influence on the Beatles." ;D

I remember when I was a kid and my grandmother came over...

HER: "What are you watching?"
ME: "The Monkees!"
HER: "On purpose?"

No love. But Pleasant Valley Sunday? Last Train to Clarkesville? They held their own! :D

Lol!! God I haven't seen that movie in ages.
Actually if you think about it that's technically true. The Monkees were the first to do a lot of the weird trippy stuff on their albums before anyone else.
Oh man I was so angry at the Beatles for such a long time. And I think that assumption came just because their show came on after the Monkees.

Awww. For real. I mean Headquarters and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. are to this day still absolutely flawless albums that get overlooked most times because they came from the Monkees.

You know what song is playing on the radio AS I TYPE THIS? "Cheer up, sleep Jean, oh what can it mean?" Kismet!

I was a huge fan of the Beatles first. I was born in 1981, so it took me a while to get away from the music my parents listened to (country and religious stuff) to form my own tastes. I still remember playing with a little radio and scanning the channels until I heard a Beatles song. I think it was "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

Of course, it wasn't until high school when a girl (of course) convinced me to give them a chance that I fell in love. W-with the Beatles. Not the girl. I was already a little in love with her. ;D

And yes! As much as I like feeling like an insider for knowing some of their lesser-known songs, I wish "Hanging Around" got more airplay.

Kismet indeed!! I'm having so many Monkees feels right now. I wish I was at my old job so I could actually listen to music. I'm totally busting out my stuff when I get home tonight.

Hehe my Dad is a huge influence of what I listen to still to this day, just the music I grew up on. He loves classic rock but doesn't like the Beatles. So it took me awhile to find my way to them.

Oh man Mike Nesmith's Monkees stuff is so so sooooooo good. Damn, I'm going to my sister's to watch Supernatural tonight but we may be watching some Monkees episodes BEFOREHAND. xD

Watched some Monkees episodes last night and they were awesome. The Beatles cartoon though is really awful. Lol.

The Beatles cartoon in my neck of the woods barely saw any syndication. Monkees on the other hand, they've been cruising the channels all these years about as much as The Brady Bunch has.

Of course, nobody can hold a candle to I Love Lucy's syndication reign.

You know I've never again seen the Beatles cartoon on tv after that time when I was a kid. And I Love Lucy will forever reign because it's just absolutely, positively comedic perfection. xD

My mom was too young for the Beatles but she was just the right age for the Monkees so I grew up with their albums and remember catching the show on tv randomly. Mike was my favorite too! I used to have a cd of his solo stuff...now I want to look for it...

Yeah my mom fell just short of the Beatles so she had the Monkees. She actually won tickets when she was little to see them when they were supposed to be in Jacksonville (with opener Jimi Hendrix!!) But my granddad wouldn't take her. :(

Awww Mike. xD You should TOTALLY look up his stuff again.

Thanks for the reminder! I'm at work right now so I just requested the Nesmith solo greatest hits CD :D Time to relive my childhood haha.

My Dad wanted to get John Lennon glasses when he was a kid but his dad wouldn't let him. :( Always wondered what that would have done for his self-esteem...and I wonder if that's why he let me brother be such a fashion fiend, he was forced to repress his LOL. (My lil' bro walks the line between hipster and dork, it's adorable)

My Dad's like that as well. He's always pushed us to do whatever we wanted to do when we grow up. Not just to make money but something that we love because he never got that.
